Bullock Cart Discoveries is a programme offered for tourists by the Periyar Tiger Reserve to explore the forest tracts and villages beyond the tiger reserve on bullock carts. These villages are a melting pot of different agricultural practices and an equal variety of crops. Rich in mangoes, tamarind, onion, sunflower, jasmine and vineyards to name a few, these villages are a testimony to the co-existence of agriculture and natural flora without abusing the environment. The interpretation of these farming practices by guides that accompany the groups will enable tourists to look at nature from a novel perspective
The villages are truly a sight to behold with richly colored variety of crops and natural forest intermingling in a seemingly impossible manner. It's difficult to imagine a time when Bullock Carts ruled the streets as a primary means of transport. They were the Cadillacs of old and even though slow, got the job done. To get a gist of the sedate pace of village life, a high contrast to the frantic pace that city dwellers are accustomed to, hop on one of the bullock carts and let nature be your guide. It will take you to places unseen around the forests and villages of Thekkady and the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. There is a reason why this activity was termed as "discovery." Bullock Cart Discoveries are a tourist's shot at discovery and exploration, not just of terrain, but also of the culture of Thekkady.
