BORDER HIKING

Border Hiking in Thekkady is a day long hiking programme along the borders of the Periyar Tiger Reserve, typically beginning at 8 AM and continuing through the evening. A maximum of 10 tourists are allowed to take part in the activity in two different groups. The groups will be accompanied by two experienced guides and an armed guard. The hike routes pass through terrain of varying altitude, usually ranging from 900 meters to 1300 meters. On reaching appropriate altitudes, one can make out the lofty escarpments that border the Periyar National Park. A golden opportunity to get a closer look at Thekkady's wildlife, the hike enables chance encounters with the elephant, gaur and sloth bear apart from birds and butterflies.

The guides, many of whom are reformed ex-poachers now committed to protecting the pristinity of Thekkady's wildlife, will narrate gripping tales of their encounters with the wildlife. Their immense knowledge about the flora and fauna of the Periyar Tiger Reserve and its surrounding areas will provide tourists with a new insight into life in the forests. In the interest of safety and health, only medically fit visitors are advised to participate in the hike. Even though it will have you clambering over rocks or treading on narrow ledges with sheer drops, Border Hiking is a thoroughly enjoyable exercise that does not lack for adventure.
