Bamboo rafting is one of the most exciting available for tourists in Thekkady. A day long activity that stars at 8 AM, a bamboo rafting group will consist of a maximum of 10 tourists accompanied by four guides and an armed forest guard. With most of the guides being members of the local tribal communities (thanks to efforts as part of the Eco Development Project launched by the government), one can be assured of a highly detail-oriented sharing of information on the dense forests that surround the Periyar Tiger Reserve and the animals in it.
